accounting & business centenary writing awards
ACCA member, Dale Williams, based in Jamaica, has won the accounting & business centenary writing awards competition. Michael Shanks, based in Switzerland, and affiliate, Tony Sisule, based in Birmingham, UK, are runners-up.
In his winning entry, Dale argues that corporations may be viewed as a mirror of society as a whole, suggesting that perhaps we get the corporations we deserve, and as stakeholders, if we reflect on our own attitudes and behaviour towards the businesses with which we constantly interact, we could and should do more to encourage responsible business practices and behaviour.
Dale suggests that as shareholders, executives, employees and customers, we have failed to act responsibly, or at all, and that it is time to acknowledge this and do better in future.
Entries were appraised on cogency and writing style and judged by a panel consisting of John Brace, ACCA's president, Jon Ashworth, business features editor of the The Times, and John Prosser and Colette Steckel, editor and assistant editor of accounting & business. John Prosser said, 'The entries were of a high standard and the panel's task in deciding the winner and runners-up was enjoyable but certainly not easy.'
Dale wins £3,000, while Michael and Tony win £1,000. The winning entry will be published in the November issue of accounting&business.
