Muhammed Shariq Suri opted to study for ACCA because of its international recognition and wider coverage of subjects. "I considered other qualifications but decided they were too narrowly focused," he adds. However, he thought about discontinuing his ACCA studies after the death of his father. "The tough decision was whether or not I should return to my family in Pakistan. I decided to complete my ACCA studies in Zambia and I am glad I made that decision."
He was one of the first ACCA members to qualify in Pakistan. "When I was looking for my first job in 1994, ACCA was not that well known in Pakistan. Today, there are over 12,000 ACCA students locally and I am proud to have been an early pioneer."
After working in different jobs for both small and large organisations, Muhammed Shariq Suri joined 3M as a finance manager. Reflecting on his career to date, he believes that obtaining an international qualification gives him an edge. "My training has given me the capacity to see the bigger picture. To be successful, accountants must combine financial skills with business knowledge and comply with relevant standards, codes of conduct and the law."
