partner, Abu Timan, Oman
After training with Deloitte, Nasser then worked as an audit manager with Coopers & Lybrand. Later, he founded Abu Timan, a medium-sized practice offering a range of professional services to clients in the Sultanate of Oman. In 2002, Abu Timan became a member of Grant Thornton International. 'ACCA for me means that I belong to an exclusive club,' Nasser says. He is passionate about ensuring that the interests of members worldwide are properly represented.
He is particularly proud to have been elected to ACCA's Council. 'In this capacity I can champion the views of members throughout the Gulf region and contribute to the future shape and direction of ACCA.'
Of accountants in general, Nasser highlights the need to learn new skills, especially with globalisation and advances in technology. However, he is concerned that, in the rush to embrace new learning, there is less emphasis on accounting in some professional body syllabuses. 'I think ACCA has got it right by broadening the syllabus but not forgetting the core subjects. The public relies on us to maintain high standards - we should not fail them.'
