BEIJING
- In November, IFAC’s 30th anniversary was celebrated in Beijing. ACCA, CICPA and China Financial and Economic News (CFEN) jointly organised a seminar on 'China’s accounting profession and internationalisation'. The occasion also marked the 10th anniversary of the Accounting World under CFEN. Seven speakers addressed the audience: CICPA secretary general and IFAC board member Dr Chen Yugui; chief of China Financial and Economic News, Sun Guofu; ACCA Council member David Wu; BICPA secretary general, Lv Guoxiang; deputy president of Guanghua School of Management, Beijing University, Prof Lu Zhengfei; finance controller of network business, Motorola (China) and ACCA member Annie Sun; and vice president/CFO of China CMIIC Engineering Corporation, Zhou Yamin. Around 80 people attended the event, including ACCA members, accredited employers, partners and senior managers from local and international accounting firms, representatives from local enterprises, MNCs and universities. CGA-Canada members and staff and CPA Australia staff were also present.
- ACCA and University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (English for Speakers of Other Languages) jointly launched the International Certificate in Financial English (Cambridge ICFE) at a press conference in March. Over 30 local journalists were present, including CCTV-9 and China Education TV. The press conference was followed by a dinner attended by over 50 representatives from government departments, institutions, employers and tuition providers. Two TV stations and 16 of the 22 newspapers invited covered the event, which generated 27 feature articles and reports.
- A joint seminar with SASAC was held in May at the Shanghai National Accounting Institute. ACCA invited four speakers (a senior ACCA member from CSRC, a professor from the research institute of the Ministry of Finance, and two managers from KPMG). Over 270 financial staff from over 40 centrally supervised state owned enterprises (SOEs) participated in the seminar, including CFOs, senior financial managers and finance staff from big SOEs such as Sinopec, China Tietong Telecom, China Gezhouba Group Corp, China Marine Shipping, and China Aviation Corp. Delegates were surveyed about SOE interest in international accounting qualifications such as ACCA; over 140 questionnaires have been collected and are being analysed to help future cooperation with SASAC and ACCA’s development of training programmes for SOEs.

- At the Managing Human Capital Conference, November 2007 the challenges of attracting, keeping and maximising the potential of the best finance professionals were explored. Organised as part of ACCA's 'Managing Human Capital' events, the conference brought together some 120 attendees, mainly CEOs, CFOs and HR directors from a range of sectors to share experience, to discuss best practice and to hear about future developments in the finance sector. Delegates heard from an impressive line-up of influential business leaders, including Paul Zhang, CFO of McDonald’s China; Quin SQ Thong, North Asia director of services of DTZ Debenham Tie Leung; and Michael Snyder, chairman of policy and resources committee of the City of London. The 'Managing Human Capital' event was accredited by Shanghai Municipal Government Pu Dong District as part of its 'Financial Culture Week' campaign.
- Over 130 participants, including ACCA members, affiliates, students, and representatives of ACCA learning partners and Approved Employers, attended the professionalism and ethics conference held by ACCA in Shanghai in October, hearing a presentation from Daniel Leung, regional finance director of DuPont Greater China, and from the Lord Mayor of the City of London.
