Student and member engagement and support
BEIJING
In response to CICPA's recent release of its 'Guideline of Chinese Certified Public Accountants’ Competence', ACCA Beijing held a member and media workshop in December. Three ACCA members and three journalists attended the workshop, which looked at the Guideline and at ACCA performance objectives. Ao Yanjie, CFO of GSR Ventures, Li Ji, CFO of Xinhua Finance Media, and Li Xiankai, partner of Lee & Lee Associates, shared their experience of accounting and their opinions on how to become a qualified accountant. New Beijing News, China Auditing newspaper and Corporate Finance published detailed reports on the topic after the workshop.

- A prizegiving and graduation ceremony was held in April to honour the highest scoring candidates in the December 2006 exam session, and to congratulate the 43 affiliates who successfully passed the ACCA professional exams in 2006. Three students received awards for achieving the highest marks worldwide in Paper 1.1, Paper 1.3 and Paper 2.3, along with 19 students who scored the top marks in Mainland China in the December 2006 session. David Wu, ACCA Council member, Yang Zhiguo, deputy secretary general of CICPA, and Liu Jianchu, deputy director general of the CNAO Training Centre addressed the audience.
GUANGZHOU
- Manchester Business School (MBS), HSBC Guangzhou and Deloitte Guangzhou sponsored the graduation ceremony held in Guangzhou in December. A deputy secretary general of GDICPA attended the event and addressed affiliates and guests on the cooperation between GDICPA and ACCA.
- The tax partner and manager of KPMG Guangzhou conducted two training sessions for ACCA members and students in Guangzhou. A technical seminar was also organised with KPMG and the British Chamber of Commerce, on VAT and transfer pricing.
- Members were invited to a seminar on 'Performance through technology', organised by Deutsche Bank in partnership with ACCA and Deloitte in July.
- In order to prompt affiliates to apply for membership, an 'affiliate gathering' was organised in September in Guangzhou where two FCCAs, Benny Wu, finance controller, Guangzhou Pepsi Cola Beverage Co, Ltd, and Michael Wan, financial controller, Franke (China) Kitchen System Co, Ltd, shared their views on the value of ACCA and gave advice on issues related to career planning.
- An introduction to PER and to the Professional Ethics module was held in October in both Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Rhys Johnson, ACCA head of education and development, Asean and Australasia, spoke to students and affiliates, and explained how to complete the PER and Professional Ethics module.
- Sun Yat-sen (Zhangshan) University, one of the most prestigious universities in China and strong in accounting education, reached an agreement with ACCA in January to incorporate the ACCA syllabus into the university’s MPAcc (Master of Professional Accountant) Programme. An increasing number of graduates from this programme register with ACCA.
- The School of Economics and Commerce, South China University of Technology has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ACCA to run ACCA training for its undergraduate and postgraduate students. The training programme will start to recruit students in 2008.
- With assistance from ACCA, Hunan University’s application to run an undergraduate ACCA class was approved by the local authority. The university will start to recruit students for the ACCA class in 2008.
- Working in partnership with KSA Turi School of Accountancy, Malaysia, the Guangxi University of Finance and Economics University set up a full time CAT programme and recruited over 200 students who will register as CAT students in 2008.
- Working in partnership with a local training company, Singapore-based FTMS started to run ACCA training in Shenzhen. ZhongXin International Financial Education also began running ACCA training in both Guangzhou and Shenzhen, increasing the number of non-university tuition providers in South China from one in 2006 to four in 2007.
- The third ACCA Job Hunting Competition attracted nearly 550 students from over 10 universities in Guangdong province; 14 companies and organisations sponsored the event which made a significant impact among universities and employers in the region, particularly in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. sina.com, a major website in China, set up a micro-site for the competition which attracted 284,570 clicks.
