Student and member support
- With the mission to nurture future business leaders, ACCA accelerate aims to encourage students who are interested in pursuing a career in accountancy and finance. In 2007, over 1,500 undergraduate students joined the programme.
- ACCA Hong Kong hosted the Graduation Ceremony and Top Achievers’ Awards Presentation 2007 in October with a groundbreaking attendance of over 400 guests including top achievers, graduating affiliates and their families and friends, employers and teachers from universities and tuition providers.
- About 50 members joined a one-day study trip to Guangzhou in April and had meetings with representatives from the Department of Finance of Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of Guangdong Provincial People’s Government, the State Tax Bureau of Guangdong Province, and the State Administration of Taxation of Guangdong Provincial Office.
- Thirty ACCA students, accelerate students and student affairs sub-committee members spent a one-day study trip to Macau in April. The delegation visited the Macau SAR Finance Services Bureau.
- Over 20 members joined a four-day study trip to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in May to learn more about the investment climate and opportunities in this fast growing developing country.
- This year’s new members' Cocktail Reception was held in November, to welcome new members to ACCA, to provide an opportunity for new and old members to network, and to introduce ACCA members' support and services. Over 80 new members joined the event; ACCA president Gill Ball was special guest. Shih Wing Ching, chairman of Centaline Property Agency Ltd, was guest speaker who inspired new members with his own success story.
- ACCA Hong Kong debuted a mentorship programme which aims to provide a platform for ACCA members to nurture young members, affiliates, ACCA students and ACCA accelerate students in their career and personal developments. A total of 161 mentor volunteers, all FCCAs, were recruited to coach 232 ACCA young members, students and accelerate students. Six mentors’ workshops on mentoring techniques were organised between March to May and were launched in April to around 300 mentors and mentees. Brendan Murtagh, ACCA deputy president, inaugurated the programme.
- The ACCA Financial Assistance Scheme was introduced to extend financial assistance to anyone in need who wishes to pursue ACCA or CAT. A total of four awards were made to CAT students, covering the initial registration fee, annual subscription fees, examination and exemption fees for all papers, plus sponsorship for tuition expenses and study texts. Kaplan has endorsed the scheme.
- A number of seminars on career advancement targeting mainly young members, were organised in November. Topics covered included 'Professional Image and Business Etiquette', 'Essential Skills for a Brighter Future', and 'Things you Need to do When you get a Job Offer'. Over 80 members joined the event.
- A pilot ACCA Conditional Exemption Scheme was launched for selected accounting degree and sub-degree programmes in Hong Kong and Macau. The scheme provides a fast-track route for students to begin their ACCA studies during their final academic year in universities and institutions. About 100 students joined the pilot scheme in 2007.
- To help prepare students for the new ACCA Qualification and PER requirements, ACCA Hong Kong organised two seminars on the new Paper P1, Professional Accountant, three sessions on PER, and two seminars on exam techniques for ACCA students.
