ACCA Pakistan organised a seminar on professionalism and ethics to launch the new ACCA Qualification in Karachi. Guest of honour was Dr Hameeda Khuhro, Education Minister - Sindh. The seminar was attended by around 200 guests including ACCA members, affiliates some students, ACCA approved employers, partners and journalists. ACCA chief executive Allen Blewitt introduced the new qualification and highlighted that much of this effort was spurred by the knowledge that the absence of ethics had recently caused the downfall of several big firms. Head of ACCA Pakistan, Arif Masud Mirza said that professionalism and ethics is a journey for the students to becoming an ACCA member and during this journey students come across teachers, members and employers who help them learn professional attitude and ethical values. Also speaking were Dr Hameeda Khuhro on education and governance; Imran Aslam, CEO of GEO Television Network, on ethics in the media; the head of the University of Karachi’s Visual Studies Department, Durriya Kazi, on 'games of opportunity'; and Majid Khan, former Cricketer and Ex-CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board, on professionalism and ethics in sports. The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the launch of the new ACCA Qualification, followed by a press conference and dinner.
In March, ACCA Pakistan organised a two-day conference for CFOs in Karachi on the theme ‘CFOs - the opportunities and challenges ahead’. The conference was held to highlight emerging topics which would affect the future role of CFOs. The keynote address was given by the then ACCA president (now ACCA past president), Dennis Yeates, followed by Hon Dr Salman Shah, advisor to the Prime Minister of Pakistan on finance, revenue and economic affairs. Further presentations at the conference covered a range of topics including the impact of global regulations on the banking sector, Basel II, the adoption of XBRL, the changing nature of annual reports, workplace attitudes and behaviours, and Internet reporting. The last session of the conference focused on the need to recruit more women into the accountancy profession presented by Penelope Phoon, head of ACCA Singapore, and Kashmala Tariq, national assembly member, who spearheaded some of the recent reforms in Pakistan legislation which had an impact on women.
